Ultraviolet Pens (UV Pens)

There are many types of UV Pens available on the market and there are many different prices being asked for what sounds like the same thing.
An Ultraviolet (UV) marker is a pen whose marks are fluorescent but transparent: the marks can be seen only under an ultraviolet light. They are commonly used in security situations to identify belongings. These pens produce an ink that is only visible under UV light (black light). You can use one of these to add hidden clues or coordinates to your caches. They are semi-permanent markers and will easily write on most surfaces.

Basically, there are probably three groups of UV Pens. The first group are often purchased for youngsters to draw on paper with. They are Water Based and will have the effect of invisible ink that can been seen later under ultraviolet light. That said, nowadays there are high brightness copier papers that do not respond well to the very basic or cheaper UV Pens.

The Second group of UV Pens use a quality UV Ink, are fast drying, and do not fade like the cheaper pens do. They are also a Water Based ink, effective on many surfaces but can be rubbed off on some metals and glazed surfaces – the trial & error method is recommended. Recently many have been trying to use the Water Based UV Pen to mark things like iPads and Laptops and have found that the shiny plastic prevents the Water Based UV ink from properly adhering because it does not easily get absorbed by the material it is being put on.

The third group of UV Pens use a quality UV Oil Based ink and whilst a little more expensive than the water-based pens, the ink sticks to most things and it is the Oil Based ink that is recommended for marking shiny surfaces, plastic and similar. iPads, Laptops, Stainless steel items, porcelain and similar. The quality of the ink is much better than the others because it is waterproof, heatproof as well as being non-toxic, long-lasting and environmental friendly.
Unwanted markings can be removed with surgical spirit, methylated spirts and similar.
If you are considering using these pens on your skin, you can use it to paint your face and body so as to be the hit of the party when you get under the Ultra Violet lights in clubs, pubs and discos.

For those wanting the technical or behind the cover information, Ultraviolet (UV) light is electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength shorter than that of visible light, but longer than X-rays, that is, in the range 10 nm to 400 nm, corresponding to photon energies from 3 eV to 124 eV. It is so-named because the spectrum consists of electromagnetic waves with frequencies higher than those that humans identify as the colour violet. These frequencies are invisible to humans, but visible to a number of insects and birds.

Security
Commercially available UV markers are used to mark things for security purpose, such as to check for counterfeit money and mark property in the event of theft for the purpose of identifying ownership. It is also sometimes used in identifying whether a similar document is an original copy.

Authentic purpose
UV markers are also widely used on credit cards or lottery ticket for authentic purpose. For example, in the state of Illinois (USA), the lottery tickets are stamped with UV-invisible ink to indicate authenticity whereas credit cards are marked with a particular logo or the card type. Moreover, various countries use UV markers to create marks on stated issued driving licenses and identity cards to ensure they are authentic. Other cases include retailers marking their items to avoid customers looking to exchange or return items that were not originally bought from their stores.
Protect secret messages
Many people and organisations use UV marker to protect and hide sensitive messages from the public. This was certainly the case during the last World War. During World War II, a battle between laboratories to develop the best UV invisible ink was revealed between the Allies & the Axis powers. They were desperately trying to develop new, better UV-invisible inks that can only be revealed by a very few type of UV light with a very particular size of wavelength. This is not only because so that they can hide more messages from their enemy but this will also allow them to find out the method to read the hidden message of by their enemy.

Limitation of UV marker
Messages written by a UV marker can be discovered by the incorrect people when there is a change of reflectivity of the paper or a pen scratches mark on the paper. The smell of the ink also reduces the security of secret messages as the hidden messages can be easily found with the help of trained animals.
Unlike other invisible inks, which require heat or placing chemical liquid over to reveal the message, the UV invisible ink can be screened and read quickly with an ultraviolet light source without damaging or changing the surface of the paper. This means that people will not be able to tell or notice if a secret message has been intercepted by a third party.

The best place to mark your property is near the serial number. If this is not possible all items should be marked on the back, in the top right hand corner or in a location that is handled the least. Examples of items you could mark include: ∙ TV ∙ Mobile Phones ∙ Camera ∙ Appliances ∙ Gaming Consoles ∙ Bikes ∙ Tools ∙ Laptop ∙ All other items of value Please note: The ink is visible at first but once dry becomes invisible.

Additional UV pens are also available to buy separately.

When shined on an item that has been written on with a UV pen, the virtually ‘invisible’ writing now jumps out at you and is clearly visible for all to see. It comes with a practical gift box, three ‘AAA’ batteries and three (3) different coloured Ultraviolet Pens. There is a water based yellow UV ink pen, a light blue oil based pen and a hard to get red ink pen.

The Dual Function Torch has 12 LEDs, 3 of which are Ultraviolet LEDs, rated at 395nM which is a good match for the UV pens. Push the on/off button once and the 9 white LEDs come on illuminating a small room nicely. Push the same button again and the white LEDs turn off and the 3 UV LEDs turn on.

Ultraviolet light is useful for all sorts of applications and this kits main function is to provide the user with an inexpensive Asset or Property marking kit. By marking your valuable possessions with the numbers of your Driver’s license prefixed by the first letter of your State, you make reunification of your valuables much easier should they be recovered by the Police. All recovered property is thoroughly checked over in the Police Property room for signs of Owner Identification. This includes going over these items with a strong UV light. Because your writing dries leaving the markings ‘virtually invisible’, would be thieves would not see that your products are marked and as such would not look to remove your writing. Experience has found that the oil based UV ink is more difficult to rub off with normal wear and tear however we would recommend placing your identifiable markings in a spot where it is less likely to be constantly handled. Experiment with the different colours yourself and let us know your experience by email. feedback@neighbourhoodwatchshop.com.au

NanoTagsŪ are the most effective authentication system in the fight against theft.
This kit contains a unique applicator for marking thousands of microscopic NanoTagsŪ onto various parts of your asset.
Each tiny metal NanoTag has a chemically etched ID code – like your very own DNA fingerprint specific to you.
Simply register this ID on the international NanoTag database (www.nanotag.com) and your assets become protected
with an irrefutable proof of ownership and traceable by police.
The Tagging Wand is filled with thousands of NanoTags™, each smaller than a grain of sand.
Every NanoTag™ is chemically etched with a unique Security Identification Code. (SIC)
Easily tag your assets with the Tagging Wand and the NanoTag™ SIC becomes your very own unique
fingerprint on all your valuables.
Relax knowing that your tagged possessions are now secure, traceable and can be easily
authenticated in the event of theft or loss.

The Pack contains:
•	Tagging Wand
•	Microscope 100 x magnification
•	Entry Warning Stickers
•	Individual item stickers
•	Security Identification Code (SIC) Card
•	Instructions on how to apply
•	Clean-up instructions after use of wand

What are NanoTags?

NanoTags are octagonal pieces of microscopic nickel – 6 to 10 microns thin and ranging
from 0.3mm to 0.5mm wide. NanoTags have a hologram-like nano image displaying
changes of colour under different viewing angles. Technically not a hologram, it is
known as a Modulated Diffraction Grating (MDG). A real hologram viewed under a
microscope becomes a meaningless grey mass of micro-particles, but by contrast,
a NanoTag reveals the branding in fine detail and brilliant colour.
